Using 100,000 fake iPhones and iPads to cheat Apple 6 million USD

The fraud team erased and fired genuine IMEI and serial numbers on fake iPhones and iPads to bypass Apple employees.

The 14-member fraud group, run by three Chinese brothers Ziwei Liao, Zhimin Liao and Zhiting Liao, has imported more than 10,000 fake iPhones and iPads from China into the United States and Canada. They shoot IMEI codes and serial numbers, which belong to genuine products, onto fake devices. After that, the group intentionally damaged the counterfeit number and then changed it to genuine products at Apple Store stores in the US and Canada.

According to Robert Brewer, a lawyer of the Southern California District Court (USA), the fraud group then shipped genuine shipments, estimated value of $ 6.1 million, to China and some other countries for consumption.
According to CNN, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken years to track the operation of this gang. 11 group members were arrested and police were looking for the remaining three, Xiamon Zhong, Charley Hsu and Hyo Weon Yang. Particularly on November 13, the investigation agency also conducted 11 search warrants of individuals and local businesses in San Diego to seize $ 250,000 in cash and 90 fake iPhones.

Typically, each device manufactured by Apple has its own device identification number, including the IMEI code and serial number. In the US, using someone else’s IMEI and serial number is considered serious identity theft. “Producing fake iPhones and using them to deceive American companies, weaken the market, and harm innocent people who have their identity stolen,” Brewer said.

According to the indictment, the Liao brothers and some members are American citizens born in China. The remaining members include US citizens naturalized from South Korea, Russia and Vietnam, two US citizens, two lawful permanent residents of the United States and one Chinese national.
