Elon Musk wants to build a super Tesla factory in Germany

CEO Elon Musk plans to build a “Gigafactory” and a design and engineering center in Berlin, Germany.

“Everyone knows German technology very well. This is part of the reason we chose to build a European (Gigafactory) factory in Germany,” Musk said while attending an event in Germany today.

This gigafatory could be built near Berlin’s new airport area. This will be Tesla’s fourth factory, after two in the US and one nearing completion in Shanghai, China.

He further revealed that Tesla is also preparing to establish a engineering and design center in Berlin. Musk said that this city is one of the cradles of world art.

Tesla has had an ambition to build a factory in Europe for many years. In 2016, after Tesla acquired automobile manufacturer and designer Grohmann Engineering, Musk proposed building a factory in Europe in Germany. This intent was repeated by Tesla CEO several times before the media.

The move helps U.S. manufacturers avoid complicated procedures when importing imported cars into Europe, as well as trade and tariff uncertainty. Although Tesla’s US sales fell in the third quarter, sales in Europe have been rising since the beginning of the year.

Earlier this week, Tesla also showed off the first electric cars to be produced at its factory in China after about 10 months of construction. The factory has a total investment of US $ 5 billion, with a capacity of 1,000 vehicles per week by the end of this year and tripled from next year.
