2020 Mazda3 – an attempt to escape the mainstream

Mazda does a lot of things to make the C-class sedan more luxurious, of course everything is just a step up.

September 23, 2014 is the anniversary of Toyota Vietnam when the launch of the new generation Altis, moving from office neutral design to pursuing young people. But that day, also memorable with Truong Hai. Because Altis did not come in an attempt to rejuvenate, opening up the opportunity to occupy the C-segment sedan segment for Mazda3, the car with a youthful appearance with Kodo design was very suitable for Vietnamese customers at that time.

By the end of 2014, Altis was still at the top of the C size, reaching the top 10 with nearly 5,400 cars sold, the Mazda3 was only about 2,200 cars and could not squeeze into the top. But by 2015, the market reacted immediately to the change in product strategy of the two firms. Mazda3 rose to 6th place with 5,987 vehicles, Altis came in 7th place with 5,926 vehicles, losing only 61 units. But from 2016 onwards, the further distance went, Mazda3 became more and more high, while Altis sometimes disappeared from the rankings. The gap between the two cars in 2018 is nearly 8,000.

The car with a zoom-zoom face has gradually replaced compatriots to become the symbol of C-sized sedans, popular choice for customers with a price of 800 million. With the continuous price reduction strategy, Mazda3 and CX-5 help Truong Hai achieve its target of gaining market share in the period of 2015-2017. From 2018, the company changed its strategy, focusing more on the profit of each car sold, with the reason that it had previously sacrificed profit to achieve sales. To date, the Mazda strategy turns in a more challenging direction. The company will have to accept the trade-off of profits and profit in order to effectively orient itself to become a “high-end brand” in the long term.

This mission is placed on the shoulder of Mazda3. “Luxury” in the direction of the Japanese automaker is understood as a breakthrough compared with popular compatriots, but certainly not to the “luxury” class of German cars. In Japan, under Germany is how some companies are aiming, such as Peugeot (France), a brand also distributed by Truong Hai in Vietnam.

To move beyond the ordinary segment, Mazda3 must show what the opponent does not. The Japanese automaker thus upgraded many things, but still lacks to become comprehensive. The new generation has solved the look and comfort well, but it takes more time to solve the operating style problem.

At the point of view, the designers did well. The Kodo 2.0 design language inspired by the RX-Vision concept has removed all limitations of the old version. In the previous generation, coupe-oriented, more contoured lines were characteristic of Mazda sedans. But this styling is a bit confined on Mazda2, Mazda3 because of its small size, only really elegant on Mazda6. Therefore, Mazda3 is not a car school. To the new generation, the curves are straightened, the lines are simpler and more coherent, such as the cluster of LED lamps with large grille.

The old Mazda3 emphasized the sensuality with curves, the new Mazda3 emphasized the elegance with a flat array. Minimizing body lines helps to enhance light effects when viewed from different angles, lighting conditions – something luxury car manufacturers do very well. The lower lamp assembly gives way to the bonnet. Overall, the school car sedan and more refined.

Interior is more eye-catching when changing style, developing horizontally. Air-conditioning system, air vents form a small strip neatly placed just below the dashboard. While the center screen stands up towards the driver, the dashboard surface creates visual depth, less boring for the space below. Leather is used to maximum, while limiting the plastic. The second row has legroom for comfort, but the front row feels a bit tight for tall passengers. Some of the details seem to be inspired by luxury automakers such as the doorknob handle like on Porsche, while the square key like Volvo’s.

Making good sense and comfort, the rest of Mazda is shaping the operating style more clearly if you want to put yourself in the high-end segment. What the company does better than the previous generation is the ability to manage within the city, when the car runs at the speed range and revs from low to medium. Throttle response is adjusted more sensitive, helping each time to overtake or decelerate and accelerate back smoother.

Engineers from Japan also said they focused on upgrading the ability to drive at the appropriate speed range of urban environments, for customers to use cars every day, but not towards the high speed range. Therefore, about 80 km / h or more, the Mazda3 is not as flexible and sporty as the Honda Civic.

The point of attention on the new generation is that the new shock absorber is a torsion bar, replacing the previous multi-link type. Torsion rods which are not flexible, balanced and stable, resistant to twisting as well as multi-links. The biggest reason Mazda replaced this system is to reduce weight and increase space. To overcome the weaknesses of the torsion bar, the company increased the frame alignment, increased stiffness along the suspension as well as reduced the vertical elasticity of the tire to eliminate vibration, increase the ability to reduce damping.
